Laguna Seca 2013: Celebrating the Corvette
This year marks the 60th Anniversary of the Chevrolet Corvette, an icon of the American sports car. There have been many special events this year to celebrate the Vette's anniversary, but being at Laguna Seca for the Monterey Historic Races was certainly a great way to honor this classic beauty. One of the first things we ran across at this event was the Corvette Corral, where Corvettes from every generation were on display. This row was a Corvette lover's dream, as superb specimens from each year were parked side by side, in chronological order. Chevy didn't stop there, as this Corvette "library" was filled with more examples, and fantastic in-depth detail on each one...As part of the celebration Chevrolet brought out a great display of Corvettes like this 1960 Cunningham Corvette ...... and the 1957 street version."The Corvette started out as a 'Dream Car' at the GM Motorama in New York in 1953. Six months later the first Vette was rolling off the assembly line and along with it America's love of the Corvette. In 1956 the car was restyled to look like the icon that most people are familiar with."The #3 car driven by John Fitch won its class at 24 Hours of Le Mans in 1960. The street version is a rare 1957 "Fuelie" fuel injected model.
The #3 car was signed by John Fitch in 2006, the original driver of the car at Le Mans.
The C1 generation is beautiful, and the C2 or "Sting Ray" generation is stunning in its own right. This race car was another Le Mans favorite with future automotive giants at its wheel. Dick Guldstrand, Bob Bondurant and Don Yenko all drove this Big Block Sting Ray and went on to significantly influence the future of the automotive industry. One of the great features of the street version was the 427 CID Big Block that produced 425 horsepower. A rare and cherished version of the C2 is the 1963 split window, which only lasted one brief year.We leave you with another C1 Corvette at the Mother's Trailer. While the Vettes were plentiful, they weren't the only gems at this amazing event. Stay tuned as we bring you more highlights from Laguna Seca!
