Taken with a Teardrop: The 1938 Talbot Lago T15OCS "Goutte d'Eau"

It's time to share another stunning beauty from the Mullin Automotive Museum with you, and this time, it's a 1938 Talbot Lago T150CS "Goutte d'Eau," which literally translates into "drop of water" - most commonly referred to in the automotive world as a "teardrop" shape...

A Figoni & Falaschi masterpiece, the Mullin tells us that this car's history began in 1938. "Originally ordered by Woolf Barnato, a well known 1930s playboy, race car driver, and financier." Barnato was an accomplished race car driver, winning Le Mans in 1928, 1929, and 1930.  To this date, he is the only driver in Le Mans history with a perfect wins-to-start ratio."The car was brought to the U.S. by Otto Zipper in the 1950s and subsequently displayed at the Cunningham Museum.  It was then sold to Peter Giddings and resold to John Calley, president of Warner Bros.The story then picks up in the 1980s, when it was sold to Pat Hart who undertook a 10 year restoration. In 1991, Peter Mullin purchased the car and completed the restoration."This beauty has had many successful Concours showings since 1990, yielding several awards, including Most Elegant Car, 1st in Class, and Best Teardrop in the World at the famous Pebble Beach Concours.A showing at the 2001 European Concours was also successful, as this teardrop won 1st in Class, Best of Show, Peoples Choice Award and Most Elegant Car. It continues to show and win awards, most recently in 2012 at the Marin Sonoma and Rodeo Drive Concours events.Any opportunity to see a teardrop like this in person is not to be missed, and the best collection of them resides at the Mullin Automotive Museum, so be sure to keep the Mullin on your short list of must-see automotive museums!
