Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance 2013: Race Cars
With the history of racing strongly tied to Pebble Beach, it is no surprise to find race cars at the Concours d'Elegance...We start with a 1967 Chevrolet L88 Corvette convertible. As it is the 60th anniversary of the Corvette, it was great to see this C2 at Pebble Beach, and we had just seen many of its brethren running and on display at Laguna Seca just days before.Ah, the famous Ferrari red. Whether on a sports car or race car, it is undeniably distinctive.This 1979 Porsche 935 K3 Coupe is a champion in every sense of the word. Entered in the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 1979, it went on to be the race's overall winner.This 1970 Ferrari 512 S Berlinetta has a great racing heritage and was also featured in the 1971 Steve McQueen movie Le Mans.This 1908 Benz 105 HP Prinz Heinrich Race Car is believed to be the first race car with its sponsor painted on it.This 1921 Alfa Romeo G1 Race Car was the first Alfa Romeo built (originally the car company was just Alfa). An interesting fact about this car is that it was sold to a businessman in Australia, and from there it was bought by a farmer who used it to heard cattle, a far departure from its racing heritage. Can you imagine seeing this car out on a field amidst cows?It later hit a tree and the motor was removed to be used as a water pump. Fortunately, it was found and restored to what you see here.This 1960 Watson Agajanian-Willard Battery Special Roadster won the 1963 Indianapolis 500 at the hands of the famous race car driver Parnelli Jones. A year earlier Jones set a record at the Indianapolis 500 with a lap speed in excess of 150 mph.From early race cars to Indy cars, there were fine examples of race cars Pebble Beach this year.
