Monterey Historic Races: On the Track

Start your engines! As you know, we were in Monterey for Classic Car Week that occurs during the week of the Concours d'Elegance.  One of the most exciting events is the Monterey Motorsports Reunion at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca. This event attracts some of the best in vintage cars, from Indy cars to muscle cars, to compete against one another.Over 500 race cars descended upon the raceway that weekend, and some of those were there to celebrate the 60th anniversary of the Chevrolet Corvette. Check out the first car of the group, a great looking C1 Vette.We ran across several Alfa Romeos like this little number, which was leading an Aston Martin down the track.This one was certainly eye-catching, but it was the sound of it that really held our attention.  Each time this driver came out of the first turn, he powered out of the turn and the powerful V8 under the hood gave us all quite a thrill.Normally, we would never include a picture where the car was barely in the shot, but as you can see he is a little sideways ...... and ended up crashing into the tires right in front of us.The best part is that he started the car right up and was racing again in no time.Laguna Seca's famous corkscrew is a perfect place to hang out. We just parked it under a tree and watched the cars come screaming over the hill.So one of the things that was interesting to Sara and I was how small the 60's Indy cars were. It was amazing what these drivers could do in such a limited interior space.It is incredibly easy for the cars to get sideways on the corkscrew, as demonstrated by this car.An interesting fact about the corkscrew is that it is a blind corner. Drivers aim the car at a specific tree that is marked with a red ribbon in order to navigate themselves around the corner.From the track to the paddock, there was so much to see at this show, and - of course - we have more to bring you.  Stay tuned!
