Decidedly Delicious: The 1937 Delage

We have a bit of a confession to make...We've become absolutely obsessed with the cars on display at the Petersen's current exhibit, FINS: Form without Function.IMG_0236rIt's easy to fall in love with these finned beauties, particularly when fins adorn a thirties era beauty like this Delage (well, in the case of this French beauty, that would be fin, singular).  A sleek fin AND extra-curvy fenders?  Yes, please.  Thankfully, the Petersen provides us with excellent detail on this car, just enough to satisfy our newest Delage obsession:IMG_1624r"The extreme length of the Delage D-8 chassis gave coachbuilders the freedom to create streamlined cars with fashionably long hoods and dramatically sloping rear decks.IMG_0237r IMG_1627r IMG_1626r IMG_1633rThe ultimate expression of this ideal, the Delage Aerosport by Letourneur et Marchand of Paris featured pillarless "hardtop" styling and a fin on the trunk that suggested advanced engineering and high speed capability.IMG_1632rThe styling was so highly regarded that an Aerosport was one of a pair of Delages chosen to represent the French government at the automotive display at the 1939 New York World's Fair.  Other French coachbuilders to employ fins in their designs included Pourtout, Clabot, and Figoni & Falaschi."This Delage reminds us of our trip earlier this year to the Mullin Automotive Museum, home of many gorgeous French coaches!
