Car Club Crash: South Coast Corsa (SCC)
Always wanted to know a little bit more about a certain car club? Well then you are in the right spot as we do a car club crash on South Coast Corsa a Corvair Club from the South Bay.You know I'm a big fan of the Corvair in all its forms and hang with these guys a lot. They put on one of my favorite events each year the Corvair Car Show at the Bob's Big Boy in Downey, CA. Here are a few pics from last years event.
Greg from South Coast Corsa sent me this fantastic info about the start up of the Corvair Clubs in SoCal as well as more info about the club and their show.In the early 60s, Chevrolet promoted the creation of Corvair clubs and driving events for the many loyal and enthusiastic Corvair owners, and there were many independent Corvair clubs started while the car was still being sold. On May 14,1969, the last Corvair came off the production line, and when it was revealed that Corvairs were not going to be made any more local Southern California members started the Los Angeles Corvair Club. The founders of this club included Dick Gundzek and Bruce St. Gean. Club membership grew upwards of 400 members, and meetings were held twice a month, first held in Inglewood, moved to Santa Ana, and then back to Inglewood. By 1972, in order to ease the long distances members had to travel to meetings, and with the inability to find a place large enough to accommodate so many members, it was decided to break up the club into three groups. The three clubs became SOUTH COAST CORSA (located in the South Bay), CORSA WEST (located in the San Fernando Valley), and VINTAGE CORSA (located in Orange County). In 1973, South Coast Corsa hosted the National Convention in Anaheim, CA.Today, South Coast Corsa (SCC) has about 55 dues-paying members. Meetings are held once a month in Torrance, CA, and the club participates in many events throughout the year. SCC hosts a yearly car show every September – “The Biggest Little All Corvair Car Show in Southern California” – at Bob’s Big Boy Broiler, Downey, CA. The 2016 SCC All Corvair Car Show will be held on September 10, 2016 from 10am-3pm. In 2015, ninety-three Corvairs attended the show, and SCC is hoping to break that record with 100 Corvairs in 2016. So, mark your calendar and get your Corvair ready for a great event! SCC is on Facebook and Instagram – SouthCoastCorsa (a new website is currently under construction).
