Brea Baptist Church Car & Truck Show 2014
This was our first year visiting the Brea Baptist Church Car & Truck Show, which brought out an eclectic collection of cars and trucks, and a a fantastic group of owners that were filled with fun stories about their vehicles. We are big fans of all things Willys, but to find an original steel Americar is a rare. The car started out as a drag racer, and Jim Boatright the car's current owner, kept that theme when he redid the car for the street.Under the hood is a 392 Chrysler Hemi with a BDS 671 supercharger. We caught this cool little detail, a "remove before flight" tag hanging from the dash. We have no doubt that this Willys can fly down the highway!Danny Simmerman, one of the funniest guys we've met at a car show, owns this magnificent flame-licked coupe .With its exquisite detailing and road-ready stance, our only regret was not being able to see this rod in action.Danny told us a hilarious story about buying a new Vette. There was a special color called Magnetic Red for the 1999 Vette that no dealer seemed to have available, and Danny was anxious to see more than a paint chip before he ordered it. He finally found one sales guy that had seen it on a car. When Danny asked him what the color was like, the salesman simply replied that it was "bitchin.'" When Danny asked him to actually describe the color, the salesman said, "I just did." Needless to say, Danny ordered that color, and tells us that the color lives up to its original description! How cool is it when the parking spot you had for the show is one you already own?It was nice to see this classic horseless carriage, circa 1910, at the show.I'm loving the Starsky and Hutch paint job on this clean-lined Nova!It is hard to believe this breathtaking F1 started out as a barn find. You know this Daily Driver sign stopped us in our tracks. If we're lucky, we'll meet this F1 out on the road some day and post it as a Street Spot in action! At first glance, this curvy stunner appeared to be black. But, in fact, it is a sublime shade of deep green. If you have any doubts, check the license plate "POSNIVE."When you are looking for a classic small car, you can't go wrong with the Mini. There is no reason to adjust your screen, the steering wheel really is on the right. It's smart to start the kids off early to set them up right for their love of hot rods, and you can definitely do that in this stroller, but we can't forget..to send them to school so they can learn all about cars and culture. Who wouldn't want to ride to school in this bus? This long and low '51 Merc was quite the sight, but under the hood it held a surprise...pinstripping and art work that was a nod to some of the great lowbrow artists of their time. The theme carried to the interior as well...there were fine artistic details all over this grand classic. We had to circle this one a few times to find them all!The Brea Baptist Church puts on a great show - we can't wait to see what cars and characters we discover at next year's event!
