America's Most Beautiful Roadster 2014
"Clean and fresh as if new; spotless" - that is the definition of pristine that contenders must achieve in order to compete for the America's Most Beautiful Roadster trophy. A total of 10 cars were entered this year for the title (only 9 remained after an unfortunate accident), and they left a formidable task for the judges, who had to choose one winner.Congratulations to Wes Rydell and his 1935 Chevrolet Phaeton, the winner of this years America's Most Beautiful Roadster award. The fit and finish throughout the car are phenomenal, and nothing short of the perfection that the judges look for.Last year's winner, a 1927 Track Nose Roadster owned by John Mumford, was in attendance as well.Which roadsters gave the '35 Phaeton a run for its money? Eight other rods graced the showroom floor, each attracting attention and demanding respect in their own way.Owned by Bill Grant, this '32 Ford Roadster was the most delicious shade of creamy blue, and overall was incredibly classy.Finished in a true navy blue and cream combo, this Tennessee-native roadster owned by Ron Goodwin was lean and clean.Low, but certainly not slow, Charles Matus of Sacramento brought this sleek '27 contender to the group. With both paint and an engine that commanded attention, show goers were delighted with this roadster from Larry Maddox of Hemet, Ca.Richard Chairenza brought this '34 burgundy-on-burgundy stunner, which had a few surprises of its own, including neon-red lights in the engine compartment! We have to admit, we were rooting for this one - which was built completely by a (very talented) high school shop class in Roseville, Ca. If high school students can build a rod of this quality, imagine what awaits them in their automotive careers! This '32 Phaeton resides in Orange County with owner Paul Gommi and was filled with original details that satisfied purists.Lake Havasu is home for Dan Van Auken and his roadster, seen above. The mods on this '32 delighted non-purists, who were thrilled to see the modern updates and details on this rod. These contenders remind us of why we love this portion of the industry, as each rod is a fascinating combination of personal expression, unique vision, and exquisite craftsmanship. From discussions about build decisions to drooling over superb details, we love every minute we spent with these beautiful roadsters!
